DIY Wedding: Making your own wedding cake

Ok, I lie...I did't make my own wedding cake, but my mum did, with a little help from Josh's sister and Bridesmaid, India, with the carrot cake & decorating!
The decision to not have a wedding cake made by a professional soon became a quick and easy one after visiting several wedding fairs, and getting quoted ridiculous amounts, and by ridiculous, I mean in excess of £400 for a three-tiered naked cake! Like what? Seriously - definitely not for us. We were not afraid of a little DIY when it came to the wedding (check out my post about making our own wedding invitations), so having mum, who regularly bakes cakes for the family, as our cake lady seemed like the perfect solution. The only downside was mum, and bridesmaid India were a little caught up in some last minute decorating on the wedding morning.
As we love cake, we decided to have a whole table full of different flavours. After searching Pinterest, there wasn't too much inspiration in the way of cake tables at weddings, so we pretty much winged it. We hired what essentially was two ladders & a plank of wood from Lou Lou Loves Vintage, threw over a little greenery, added some flowers, and our table was ready. We also hired the cake stands from the Little Lending Company to save a few extra pennies! As we had a bit of a rustic theme going on, the idea of homemade cakes became much suited to our wedding in the end, and to be honest, I'm not a huge fan of traditional wedding cakes (or weddings - can you guess?) anyway - but each to their own!
When it came to choosing flavours, we also strayed away from the traditional fruit cake thing. We settled on chocolate, carrot, orange, lemon drizzle, and vanilla for our three-tiered cake. Oh and of course...brownies! We chose flavours we love, because what is the point on picking flavours that we don't even like just because it's tradition?
Decoration wise, we asked our fantastic florist (Swaffham & Fakenham Florists) for a few extra flowers to top our cakes off with, then we picked up a few extra bunches of gypsophelias for good ole' Morrisons! We ordered a bunch of cake toppers from Ginger Ray, which are so reasonably priced in comparison to personalised ones. But we couldn't resist the special one for our main cake!

We weren't planning on doing the traditional cutting of the cake, however, mum did such a great job that we couldn't not give them their own moment!
