When in Rome

I can't believe that it has been almost 6 months since I was wandering around the beautiful city of Rome as a newly engaged girl.

I love city breaks, but I always like to be super prepared and know exactly what it is that I want to visit before I go. Rome seemed a little easier, because you instantly imagine yourself visiting the Colosseum and the Roman Forum, and eating pizza whilst overlooking one of the famous piazzas. September was a lovely time to visit, still being very warm.

1. Colosseum

History lover or not, the Colosseum is a must visit when in Rome. I was a little alarmed that you step out the subway and yep, there it is right in front of you (you don't really expect it to be bang in front of the modern subway being such an ancient building, but that's tourism for you). You get a little audio guide to accompany you around, which definitely brings the imagination alive. The sheer size of the colosseum itself is enough to impress, let alone the incredible condition that it remains in. The Roman Forum is very nearby, and is included in your entrance fee to the Colosseum.

2. Vatican City & Museums

Of course the Vatican City & Museums are a must when visiting Rome. Make sure you follow the Vatican Museums around, taking in all the beautiful sculptures, architecture and artwork, before reaching the Sistine Chapel. You won't be short of Raphael's and Michelangelo's if you're into your art. After you've visited the museums make sure you head into the heart, the Vatican City, sit and soak up the atmosphere. You might even catch a glimpse of the Pope on certain days!

Tip: get in the queue for the museums early if you haven't already brought your tickets online - the queue is ridiculously long, and stays that way!

3. Enjoy the Italian ice-cream & delicious food

Yes, the Italian food is delicious. But yes, the ice-cream is better! Josh & I are massive ice cream fans, so when you find Italian gelato shops on every street corner, in every flavour you could imagine, it is hard to resist. We found a little Lindt store near the Pantheon and oh my goodness, it was literally the tastiest gelato, ever!

4. Visit the squares & piazzas

These are beautiful to visit, day or night. Piazza del Popolo is truly beautiful, overlooked by the Borghese Gardens. Have a tasty Italian lunch in one of the tasty restaurants around the square.

5. Segway through Borghese Gardens

We had never been on a segway before, so hiring one on a beautiful evening, to take through one of Rome's beautiful gardens seemed like the perfect opportunity - and oh my, it was so much fun! You can hire for half an hour or an hour and it is completely inexpensive.

Rome will forever remain a special city in my heart, because it is the city I got engaged in.

What are your favourite things to do in Rome?

Lots of love,

Kelly
